Brief Biodata:

Dr. Balaram Sahoo obtained his M. Sc. (Physics) degree from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, and M. Tech (Met. Engg.and Mat. Sc.)degree from IIT Bombay, Mumbai. He received his Ph.D. (Natural Sciences) in the year 2006, from University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisburg, Germany. He worked as a post-doctoral scientist (Environmental Science) at the Swiss Light Source, Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen PSI, Switzerland. He, also, worked as a post-doctoral scientist (Photon Science) at PETRA III, in Hamburg Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (HASYLAB), Hamburg, Germany. He has been a faculty member of MRC, IISc., since 2012

Research:

    • Nanomaterials synthesis, properties and devices.
      • Nanoparticles, thin films, multilayers and hybrid structures.
      • Structural, magnetic, electronic, electrical transport, optical, vibrational, thermal, mechanical and the coupled properties.
      • Data storage devices, magnetic sensors, piezoelectric sensors and actuators, Thermoelectric and magnetoelectric devices.
    • Surface and interface science, nanomagnetism.
    • Photon Science.

Dr. Sahoo’s research group is actively working on developing the cutting edge technologies and performing high level research in materials synthesis, characterization, property measurement and device fabrication using a wide variety of materials and hybrid systems, which include:

    • Synthesis of 0D (nano)materials by chemical methods, 1D and 2D nanomaterials and structures by using various techniques: MBE, thermal evaporation, e-beam evaporation,sputtering deposition, PLD and spin coating etc.
    • Expertise in characterizing materials by X-ray (synchrotron radiation) based (XRD, XRR, PDF, SAXS, GISAXS, XPS, XANES, EXAFS, XMCD, XMLD, XMS, NRXS, NRS, NRIXS, SMS etc.), neutron based (ND, NR, INS, NSE) , ion beam based (RBS), electron beam based (SEM, TEM, ED) techniques as well as many other laboratory based techniques (like AFM/MFM, Mossbauer spectroscopy, SQUID/VSM, MOKE microscopy, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TGA/DTA, AES etc.).
    • Devices of interest: data storage and memory devices (magnetic, ferroelectric, phase change and optical etc.);magnetic property (MR, GMR, TMR, exchange bias) based spin-valve devices, bio-sensors and imaging devices;dielectric(piezoelectric, ferroelectric and pyroelectric) material based sensors (transducer), actuators and other devices;novel temperature, pressure and magnetic field sensors; development of electro- optical, magneto-optical, thermoelectric, magnetostrictive devices; and otherdevices using ferromagnetic shape-memory materials.
    • Study of a wide variety of materials (Amorphous-Crystalline, Metals- Semiconductors-Insulators, Ceramics, Polymers and Composites etc.) using a wide variety of sample environments (low-/high-temperature, -pressure, -magnetic field, -electric field etc.).
